With a combined apparent magnitude of 1.36, it is the brightest star in Leo and the 21st brightest star in the sky. It is only slightly fainter than Deneb in the constellation Cygnus and Mimosa in Crux, and it just outshines Adhara in Canis Major, Castor in Gemini, and Shaula in Scorpius.
